On June 12th, 1954, Lord Rowallan attended a Scout Rally in the grounds of Lauriston Castle in Davidson’s Mains. This event marked his first visit to Midlothian, drawing an impressive crowd of around two thousand members of the Movement, as well as over three thousand members of the public.
At the Rally, the Troop were responsible for the collection and erection of twenty-eight tents and six marquees, and some of the boys of the 30th Midlothian participated in a pageant that
showcased various significant county and national historical events, with their role being part of
"The Battle of Rullion Green”.
As well as being involved in this, they had also taken part in building an exhibition camp to
show their ingenuity in making use of natural resources for comfort while living in the
rough.’
During his address, Lord Rowallan said that the challenge of the Scout Law and the Scout Promise would stand them in good stead for later life and that the training received in the Movement set standards of honour, loyalty, brotherhood and clean living which would develop a spirit of service to others, which
was the only true road to happiness.
