30th Inverleith attend 21st World Scout Jamboree in Essex

A flag party from the 30th Inverleith attended the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Essex under the leadership of Ed Mackay.

Held in 2007 at Hylands Park, Chelmsford, Essex, marked a landmark celebration of 100 years of Scouting. It was the largest gathering of Scouts ever, bringing together around 40,000 participants from 158 countries. The theme, “One World, One Promise,” reflected the spirit of unity, friendship, and shared values that have defined Scouting for a century.

The Jamboree offered a wide range of activities promoting learning, adventure, and international cooperation. At the Global Development Village, Scouts took part in workshops on key global issues such as environmental sustainability, health, and human rights. Meanwhile, the World Village provided a vibrant space for cultural exchange, where participants shared performances, crafts, and games from their home countries — celebrating the diversity and global reach of the movement.

The opening ceremony was a spectacular occasion, attended by Prince William and the Duke of Kent, and featured music, parades, and a colourful display of national flags — a powerful symbol of international unity.

A defining moment of the Jamboree was the Sunrise Ceremony on August 1, marking the exact moment a century earlier when Robert Baden-Powell held the first experimental camp on Brownsea Island. Scouts around the world renewed their Scout Promise simultaneously, in a live-linked global celebration that connected millions and honoured Scouting’s historic beginnings.
